An organic food bar is almost a cliche. There's something redundant about the phrase--even though not all food bars are organic; far from it. But it just seems natural that the food bar, which is geared towards the most health-conscious members of society, should be organic--which appeals to that same section of society.

At its most basic it is, simply, a chemical-free snack bar made with organic ingredients. Like other snack bars, its size makes it perfect for sticking into perses or pockets and such. Also, its all-natural, organic ingredients make it taste, to the discerning palate, much better than the chemical kind.

Plus, most chemical-free bars have no additives or preservatives. This can be a mixed blessing. They don't keep as long after they're opened, for one thing, and for another, some of them (not all!) will have a tendency to crumble to pieces in your hand. However, this isn't a necessary part of the bar, obviously, because some, especially chewy granola bars, are free of this "defect"--even without additives or preservatives.

As with all organic foods, you're going to find different levels of quality among food bars. Some taste like sand mixed with salt. Others are the best thing you've put in your mouth, ever. Some use "healthy" ingredients such as tofu, seaweed, and agave. Always know what each of these is before buying a multi-pack box. If you like the ingredient outside of the food bar, chances are good that you'll like the ingredient inside it. But if you dislike the ingredient, or if you aren't sure, don't think that just being inside a granola bar will automatically make it taste good. Always taste one bar before buying many.

But, on a similar note...don't assume that the bar will taste bad just because you dislike one of the ingredients. Sometimes, combining it with other things completely changes the taste, and you end up loving something you thought you would hate.

An organic food bar, like any other food, should be tried *before* you decide whether or not you like it.
